ECSU SQUEEZES BY VIRGINIA UNION 3-2, SWEEP CIAA DOUBLE HEADER FRIDAY AFTERNOON

April 14, 2006

ELIZABETH CITY, NC- Sophomore first baseman Tiffany Smith recorded her only RBI of game two versus Virginia Union University with a game winning single in the bottom of the 7th to lift Elizabeth City State University past the Lady Panthers 3-2 Friday afternoon.

With the win the Lady Vikings improve to 11-11 overall and 11-7 in the CIAA.

Unlike game one of their doubleheader, the second contest proved to be a battle of defense and pitching. The game was scoreless through the first four innings until a bases loaded fielder choice by the Lady Panthers Mag Nopova scored Chante Green giving the visitors their first lead of the afternoon. The Lady Vikings would draw even in their half of the 5th on and RBI single by Alicia Graham. In the bottom of the next inning ECSU would take the lead when a sacrifice bunt by Lavette Murphy scored Tiffany Smith. With a runner on second in their half of the 7th the Lady Panthers tied the game when Latisha Lesane single scored Rochelle Edington.

It appeared that the game was headed to extra innings as the first two Lady Viking batters grounded out to the shortstop. Luckily for ECSU, the next three batters were walked setting the stage for Tiffany Smith's game winning single, which gave the Lady Viking their fourth doubleheader sweep of the season (Saint Augustine's, Livingstone, Saint Paul's). Additionally for the second time in as many days Alicia Graham recorded 10 strikeouts in a game to even her record at 7-7 as a starter.

The Lady Vikings will return to action on Sunday, April 16th as they travel to Bowie State University to take on the division leading Lady Bulldogs. Game time is slated for 1:00pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
