SHAW UNIVERSITY DEFEATS ECSU LADY VIKINGS 89-77

RALEIGH, NC- The Shaw University Lady Bears held off an early second half surge to earn a 89-77 win over Elizabeth City State University Saturday evening at Spaulding Gymnasium. After leading trailing by 12 (44-32) at the intermission, the Lady Vikings fought back to trim the lead to 49-47 on a 3-pointer by Joyce Freeman with 16:09 remaining. The Lady Bears responded with a run of their own to push the lead back to double digits over the next four minutes. ECSU would get no closer than seven points for the duration of the contest. The Lady Bears (13-10, CIAA 10-2) placed five players in double figures with Celanese Bozeman topping Shaw with a team high 22 points. Nicky Souter added a double-double of 12 points and 14 boards. Celeste Trahan matched her career high with 36 points and 15 rebounds while Joyce Freeman and Cheniece Arthur scored 16 and 11 points, respectively. The Lady Vikings (9-12, CIAA 2-10) will take the court against Livingstone College on Tuesday, February 5 in Salisbury, NC. Game time is scheduled for 5:30pm.
