LaMonica Filer will be in her second year as the top assistant coach for the Elizabeth City State University Lady Vikings. She comes to ECSU after a seven-year stint as an assistant on the women's basketball staff at Norfolk State University. At NSU, she served as the team's recruiting coordinator, film analyzer and was also involved in scouting and developing the backcourt. Filer played at Point Loma High School in San Diego, Calif. She was a high school All-American after scoring more than 2,000 points in her career. She also had 390 assists as a high school senior, a total which was believed to be tops in the nation that year. She played at Southwestern Junior College in San Diego from 1992-94, and remains in the top five in school history in assists, steals and 3-pointers.In May of 2007, Filer was inducted into Southwestern's Hall of Fame. Filer had a standout career as a player Norfolk State. After her stint at community college, she played for two CIAA championship teams under coach James Sweat in 1994-95 and 1995-96. In her senior season, where the Spartans went 28-1, Filer led the CIAA in assists and she tied the single-game NSU record with 20 assists. Filer also ranks seventh in NSU history in assists. Filer earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from Norfolk State in 1996. |
