FAYETTEVILLE STATE LEADS AFTER FIRST DAY OF CIAA GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

Fayetteville State University, led by John Azzarelli's two-under-par 69, took an 11-stroke lead over North Carolina Central University in the first day of competition of the CIAA Golf Championship, held on Friday, April 21, at Rivers Bend Golf Course in Chester, Va.

FSU's Ian Milne shot a 72 while teammate Brent Snipes shot a 75 over the 18-hole course. The Bronco's scoring foursome was rounded out by Johnathan DeCarlo's 82. FSU sits in first place with a combined score of 298.

NCCU was powered by Brian Demby's near-record round of 67. Demby's four-under-par performance was only one stroke off the CIAA Championship record of 66, set by Kenny Sims of Fayetteville State in 1982. The Eagles sit in second place after the first day of competition with a score of 353.

NCCU's Joseph Clayton shot a round of 74 while Eagle teammate Steve Wright finished the 18-hole course with a 79. Maylon Fowler rounded out NCCU's scorers with a round of 89. NCCU is in third with a score of 314.

Johnson C. Smith University sits in third place with a combined score of 314 while St Augustine's College finished out the top four with a round of 353.
