ECSU defensive end Calvin Cunningham has been named CIAA Rookie of the Week. His Viking teammates Dexter Manley and Daniel Mendez were also recognized as Receiver and Specialty player of the Week, respectively.
 
 
THREE VIKING FOOTBALL PLAYERS RECEIVE CIAA P.O.W. HONORS

HAMPTON, VA- Elizabeth City State University football players Dexter Manley, Calvin Cunningham and Daniel Mendez have all been named Players of the Week at their respective positions as released by the CIAA Office Monday afternoon.

ECSU wide out Dexter Manley has been named CIAA Receiver of the Week for the third time this season. This past Saturday he caught three passes for 126 yards and three touchdowns. The scores went for 29 yards, 88 yards (career high) and 9 yards in the Vikings' 29-28 come from behind victory over Bowie State University at the Bulldogs' 2008 Homecoming.

Freshman Calvin Cunningham gets his first career conference honor as the CIAA Rookie of the Week for his contributions this past Saturday. He had his best day Viking uniform with 8 tackles (1 solo, 7 assisted) a half a sack for a loss of four yards and two tackles of 20 yards against the Bulldogs.

Finally junior kicker Daniel Mendez had earned Specialty Player of the Week honors for the second time in 2008. Mendez had 6 punts for 185 yards including four inside the 20-yard line and zero touchbacks. He was 3-for-3 in extra point attempts, had 4 kickoffs for 219 yards and successfully kicked an onside kick which the Vikings recovered to set up the game winning drive.

The Vikings (4-3, CIAA 4-0) will return to action on Saturday October 18th at Lincoln University of Pennsylvania. Game time is scheduled for 1:00pm and it will be the Lions' first football Homecoming in 48 years. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
