Oct. 21, 2006
ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Elizabeth City State University Vikings improved to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the CIAA as they defeated the Shaw University Bears 36-0 Saturday afternoon at Roebuck Stadium. With the win, ECSU posts its fourth shutout of the season and is guaranteed a better record than their last winning season of 7-4 back in 1995. Defensively the Vikings are allowing a CIAA best 12.4 points per game. Emanuel Plummer, Vitas Berrian and James Powell all led the charge for the defensive unit, each registering 7 tackles each. Freshman Justin Hamilton had his second straight multi-interception day with 3 picks returned for 20 yards. Brandon Field capped the Vikings 10 play, 63- yard opening drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to give ECSU a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. That possession consumed 4 minutes and 21 seconds, the longest time of any scoring drive on Saturday, but it would not be the last for ECSU. Chris Carter would finish with a career afternoon, with personal bests of 140 yards and 3 touchdowns with his longest of the day going for 43-yards with 6:22 remaining in the first half. The only other receiver to catch a touchdown pass from Curtis Rich, Jr. was Marvin Jackson, who was on the end of a 17- yard score with 5:44 remaining in the game. Rich also had a career day throwing for a personal best of 310 yards and 4 touchdowns. Quarterback Jermonty Kimbrough finished the afternoon with 156 yards for the Bears who fall to 2-6 overall 1-4 in the CIAA. The Vikings will return to action on Saturday, October 28, 2006 as they travel to Lawrenceville, VA to face Saint Paul's College. Kickoff is slated for 1:30pm.
