CHARLOTTE, N.C. -In the battle of the undefeated teams, it would be Elizabeth City State University over Johnson C. Smith University, 81-74 in double overtime.

The Golden Bulls (4-1, 2-01CIAA) rallied back from a 13-point deficit to send the game into double-overtime. However the determined Vikings would not let up and delivered when it counted most.

Elizabeth City State hit the hard wood firing from the three-point range. DeJuan Morrison knocked down three first half long balls en route to a 15-point first half performance. Trent Bivens also hit two three-pointers for 11 points in just 17 minutes of play.

The Bulls cut the lead on back to back shots by the red hot James Dillard with 9:15 remaining in regulation. ECSU extended the margin back to nine, but JCSU tied the game on a steal by Ryan Scott turned lay-up by Tavaris Little, 56-56 with less than three minutes left. JCSU finally took the lead on a reverse lay-up by Jerry Hollis The final two minutes of the contest were the most intriguing as both teams traded buckets. With the score tied at 61-61, a foul on Mel Johnson with .7 seconds left in regulation sent Ronald Thornhill to the charity stripe for a one and one. Thornhill would miss the free pass and an overtime session ensued.

In the extra session, Morrison attempted the long ball with 40 seconds left but it hit the rim and fell into the arms of Dillard. There was a two second differential between the game clock and the shot clock. With 20 seconds, head coach Steve Joyner, Sr. wanted to call a timeout. Marc Reid fouled Scott and sent him to the line for two. Scott hit both his free throws and the score was 68-65 in favor of JCSU with 14 seconds left. ECSU head coach Shawn Walker wanted to talk it over. With a one possession lead (68-65), Anthony Hilliard knocked down a long ball from NBA range to send the game into double overtime.

The second overtime would be all Vikings as they outscored the Golden Bulls 13-6. Morrison and Hilliard tied for the game high with 24 points each while Trent Bivens scored 20 points respectively.

Dillard led the JCSU offense with a team high 22 points while Jerry Hollis fell two assists short of a triple double with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 8 assists. Ryan Scott chipped in with 13 points.

The Vikings (3-0, CIAA 2-0) will return to action at the Fresh Coast Classic November 28-29 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. They will face Central State (Ohio) on Friday at 4:00pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
