ELIZABETH CITY AND VIRGINIA STATE TO MEET IN FINALS AGAIN
April 23, 2005 PETERSBURG, VA-For the second straight year Elizabeth City State and Virginia State will compete for the CIAA Baseball Championship. On Saturday, both ECSU and VSU defeated Shaw University to advance to the championship game. The Vikings edged the Bears 15-13 while the Trojans trounced Shaw 21-2. Now the Vikings and Trojans will meet for the second time in the 2005 tournament. On day one the ECSU shocked the home team 13-12 in a come from behind victory. The Trojans, who have won four out of the last five baseball titles, are two-time defending CIAA champions. In the 2004 baseball final ECSU came from the losers bracket and defeated the Trojans 18-13 in game one. VSU went on to win the tiebreaker 11-9. In the first game on Saturday, with the score knotted at 13 in the bottom of the 8th, an RBI single by Victor Branch scored Meshaw Taylor to give the Vikings a one run lead. Then Branch score on a fielder choice to give the Vikings the two run lead. In the bottom of the inning, Viking pitcher Ben Becker struck out two of four batters faced for his fourth win of the season. In game two, the Bears offense could not keep pace with the Trojans. Shaw managed to score only two runs on nine hits, while VSU rolled off twenty-one runs on eighteen hits. Defensively, the Trojans did not give an inch, turning four double plays. Leading the way for VSU was catcher Jason Jennings who finished 2-4 with 4 RBI's. Shaw University finishes their season at 18-21. Elizabeth City State (18-20) and Virginia State (14-18) will face off at 1:00pm at Whaley Colbert Field on the campus of Virginia State University.
