VIKINGS ADVANCE TO CIAA BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
April 23, 2005 PETERSBURG, VA- The Elizabeth City State University Vikings defeated the Shaw University Bears 15-13 at Whaley Colbert Field on the campus of Virginia State University. With the score knotted at 13 in the bottom of the 8th, an RBI single by Victor Branch scored Meshaw Taylor to give the Vikings a one run lead. Then Branch score on a fielder choice to give the Vikings the two run lead. In the bottom of the inning, Viking pitcher Ben Becker struck out two of four batters faced for his fourth win of the season. The score was 10-4 in the Vikings' favor until the 4th inning when the Bears rolled off four runs. After holding ECSU scoreless in their half of the inning, Shaw took their only lead of the game scoring two runs on a RBI double by William Sanders, who was driven in on a single by Avery Bryant. ECSU would tie the score in the bottom of the 5th when Carlos Gutierrez scored on a throwing error by Shaw third baseman Travis Salley. Shaw would rally again in the top of the 6th on a two-run homer by Brandon Smith. The lead was only temporary as the Vikings would fight to tie the game for the second time before their 8th inning rally helped ECSU to remain unbeaten in tournament play. ECSU (18-20) will face the winner of the Shaw University/Virginia State semi-final. |
