VIKINGS ADVANCE AT CIAA BASEBALL TOURNAMENT
April 17, 2008
PETERSBURG, VA- The Elizabeth City State baseball team downed Shaw University 17-11 Thursday morning at Whaley Colbert Field on the campus of Virginia State University. The Vikings now move on in the winner's bracket of the double elimination tournament to face Virginia State University at 11:00am on Friday. The winner of that game will advance to the finals on Saturday at 1:00pm. In game one the Vikings scored in all but two of the nine innings played in route to an upset of top seeded Shaw University. The Vikings jumped ahead early by scoring four runs in the top of the first and never looked back. Then home runs from Troy Andrews, J.J. House and Nick Johnson helped keep the Bear's pitching staff at bay for the remainder of the game. The Bear's did rally in fourth and seventh inning with 4 and 3 runs scored respectively. However with ECSU leading 14-11 in the top of the eighth, Johnson's three RBI blast over center field solidified ECSU's place in the winner's bracket Tuesday morning. Virginia State earned their place in the semis by defeating Saint Augustine's College 12-5. For more on the 2008 Spring Sports Championships, visit www.theciaa.com. |
