LANEY HOMERS THREE TIMES, SETS NEW RECORD IN 12-3 BASEBALL VICTORY OVER SHAW UNIVERSITY
April 15, 2006
ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Elizabeth City State University baseball team defeated the Shaw University Bears 12-3 in game one of their CIAA doubleheader Saturday afternoon. The two teams resumed a game that was suspended on April 3 due to a thunderstorm. When the game was halted just before the start of the fourth inning the Vikings held a 7-0 advantage. The Vikings got out to a 2-0 lead on back-to-back home runs by Carlos Gutierrez and Ivan Laney. After a scoreless second inning ECSU exploded for a five-run third inning in which Laney collected his second home run of the day. Today the Vikings did not miss a beat as they picked up right where April 3rd ended. Ivan Laney smashed a two-run homer, technically his third for the day. By the end of the fourth, ECSU had scored 4 runs on 5 hits and an error all of which happened with them down to their final out. Laney, a native of Lanham, MD, has now set a new record for home runs in a game with 3. ECSU improves to19-12 (CIAA 10-5) overall while Ben Becker, who pitched a complete game improves to 4-3 as a starter. The two teams will square off in game two in approximately thirty minutes.
