Final Stats

ELIZABETH CITY, NC-Despite a late threat by the visiting Falcons, the Elizabeth City State University Vikings completed their season sweep on Saint Augustine's College with a 7-3 win in game two Tuesday afternoon at Holmes Field.

After scoring a run, the Falcons were threatening the bases loaded in the top of the 7th when A.J. Burnette was thrown out at home as he attempted to score after the ball got by Viking catcher Chris Taylor. Taylor hustled to the backstop and threw the ball to pitcher Deshaun Fletcher who was covering home plate, to end the Falcon rally and the game. It was somewhat of a wild finish to what otherwise had been a stagnant game. The Vikings were on the verge of a shut out until the top of the 6th inning when the Falcons scored 2 runs on a hit and a Viking error for their first score of the game. In the bottom half of the 6th Carlos Gutierrez got one of the runs back with a solo home run, his 13th of the season.

ECSU improves to 18-12 overall and 9-5 in conference play. The Falcons drop to 5-7 in the CIAA and 5-22 overall. Deshaun Fletcher now holds the best record amongst the Viking starting pitchers at 4-1.

The Vikings will close out the regular season as they make-up a rain-delayed doubleheader with Shaw University on Saturday April 15th. Back on April 3rd, the Vikings and Bears played three complete innings before the game was called due to a thunderstorm. When play resumes, ECSU will hold a 7-0 advantage in the top of the 4th inning. The first pitch is scheduled to thrown at 1:00pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
